Life:Styles from Coldcut
Before big beat, before trip hop, even before acid house there was Coldcut, sampling, scratching, mouthing off, years ahead of their time. Now, post-acid house, post-trip hop, post-big beat they're still here, still mouthing off. And still ahead of their time.
DJs Jonathan More and Matt Black, aka Coldcut, rose to acclaim in the mid-80's through production and remix work for a number of modern rock, hip-hop, and dance outfits, including Yazz, Lisa Stansfield, Junior Reid Blondie, Eric B. & Rakim and Queen Latifah.
Through their Ninja Tune/Ntone labels, they have been a unifying force in underground experimental electronic music through their eclectic radio show, Solid Steel and club and tour dates. Coldcut's talent in reformulating and producing were recognized by a 'Producers Of The Year' award by the BPI in 1990. Their debut album, 'What's That Noise' went silver.
They wrapped up their major label involvement in 1993 witht he album, 'Philosophy' containing the ambient ballad 'Autumn Leaves' - a French Jazz perennial which foresaw the current 'French Connection epitomized by Air, and the emergence of 'easy listening' as a cool thing.
In October 1995, Ninja Tune almost by accident started the hottest club in town. the party organized for the launch of DJ Food's 'Recipe For Disaster' at the Blue Note, London was so successful that they continued with a monthly residency: Stealth. For the first time all the Ninja DJ's were playing together in the same venue. Stealth was 1996 'Club Of The Year' in NME, The Face, and Mixmag.
Their 'Journeys by DJ' mix album, '70 Minutes of Madness' was released to rave reviews. Mixing with ease the Dr Who theme into Red Snapper, moving gracefully from Harold Budd to Mantronix to Photek, it was one of the albums of the year in Muzik, Mixmag and Melody maker, and No.1 compilation f allt ime in Jockey Slut, 1998. The release was credited with bringing to wider attention the sort of freestyle mixing the pair were always known for through their radio show on KISS FM, Solid Steel, and their steady club dates, a style that has since taken off through clubs like Blech and the Heavenly Sunday Social, "We mix things, over as broad a spectrum of activities as possible."
Harmless records now present the first ever straight up compilation by the secretaries of funk, reggae, soul and all else in between: Coldcut. Masters of sonic disaster!
